A wild, unspoiled valley lying north of Briancon. The Valee de la Claree offers the ski tourer a wealth of options.
Easily reached from Chamonix (3 1/2 hours drive) Nevache is our starting point. There are many possibilities on both sides of the valley but this tour gives a good flavour of the area.
- We tour up the road (the Haute Vallee de la Claree is snowed up in winter) and access the refuge Ricou via track put in place by the guardian. This cosy refuge serves local food from the valley and close by (the cheese from the Queyras is renowned). We can revisit touring skills such as skinning, kick turns and avalanche scenarios on this day.
- This day we tour further up the valley, past Lac de la Cula and then on towards the crete des Muandes. From a col at 2865m we then gain the summit of the Rocher de la Grand-Tempete (3002m) and ski the other side towards the refuge Drayeres.
- Today we ski the classic tour de Pain de Sucre. We can choose to ski north or south facing slopes depending upon the snow conditions (the south is a little steeper). We then ski out to Nevache where we can stay a further night or return to Chamonix.
